The malabsorption of vitamin B12 is increasingly problematic, particularly in the elderly, and it has been shown that measurement of total levels of this important vitamin may not detect deficiency as well as the detection of levels of the 25% or so of vitamin B12 which is biologically available (as holotranscobalamin) and measured by Axis-Shield's patented assay.
The assay is available as a marker under the AxSYM xtra progamme, and a manual ELISA is planned for release in 2011, together with an ARCHITECT assay. General news on the role of Active-B12 as a marker can be found at www.active-b12.com.
